# Higher Physics 1B

This is a study guide for the subject PHYS1231 - Higher Physics 1B. Students studying PHYS1221 - Physics 1A will also find this guide useful, as the syllabi are the same (as of semester 2, 2012). PHYS1131/1121 is taken as assumed knowledge. This study guide is based on the 2012 course, and is structured according to the following topics:

Electricity

Includes: Electric charges, conductors and insulators, Coulomb's Law, Electric field (and deriving them for uniformly charged objects)
Includes: Electric flux, Gauss's Law
Includes: Electric potential, voltage, electron-volts, derivations of electric potential for various objects, equipotent surfaces
Includes: Capacitance, capacitors in series/parallel, derivations of capacitance for various objects, potential energy in capacitors, dielectrics

Magnetism

Includes: Magnetic poles, magnetic forces, magnetic fields for current-carrying wires and charged particles, magnetic flux, the van allen belt, the right hand rule
Includes: Using Ampere's law, using the Biot-Savart law, solenoids, Gauss's law in magnetism
Includes: Faraday's law, Lenz's law, motors, generators, eddy currents, inductance, inductors and solenoids, energy in a magnetic field, energy density in a magnetic field

Physics Optics

Includes: Wave properties and definitions, the Poynting vector, intensity, energy density of light, momentum of light, pressure of light, the EM spectrum
Includes: The ray approximation, reflection, index of refraction, optical path length, total internal reflection, dispersion, Huygen's principle, phase change with reflection
Includes: Interference, refraction, equations for one slit, equations for two slits, interference patterns for three or more slits, phasors, interference in thin films, Newton's rings, resolution, Rayleigh's criterion
Includes: Polarisation by selective absorption, by reflection, by double refraction, by scattering

Quantum Physics and Solid State Physics

Includes: Blackbody radiation, Stefan's law, Wien's displacement law, Rayleigh-Jeans law, Planck's law, Energy-level diagrams, the photoelectric effect, threshold frequency, work function, De Broglie's equation, wave packets, Heisenberg's uncertainty principle
Includes: Wave function, Expectation values, Particle in a box, Schrödinger's equation, Finite potential wells
Includes: Electron cloud theory, Fermi-Dirac distribution, Density-of-states function, Energy bands, Semiconductors, Doping
